I would say it is the opposite if you categorize it by political party but it actually most likely crosses party lines. In terms of Environmental extremists who think we are destroying the planet just really don't know the facts at all. People who supposedly "don't care about the environment" just have a better understanding and know that we are not destroying the earth and don't see a need for a call to global saving action. The have basic concerns like local pollution, littering, clean water things like that, everyone cares about things like that. But the notion that we control the environment and global climate change etc...is ridiculous. I would advise more people educating themselves on the facts and be rational not relational. A great book to read is Trashing The Planet by Dixie Lee Ray as a starter and she lists several good resources that area also good things to read. I gained a lot of knowledge after studying environmental effects for over 2 years and writing a report on my findings. As far as Al Gore and George Bush, Bush far better understands the truth behind the environment and knows a lot of what Al Gore says is not true or accurate. So why would he waste his time dealing with things that are not as dire as they are believed to be.
A few missed facts:
There are more trees in the U.S. now than there were 100 years ago.
The Earth is a remarkable machine that has a self-cleansing process to digest much of the pollution produced.
"A 1995 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC)... wrote that some 90 billion tons of carbon as carbon dioxide
annually circulate between the earth's ocean and the atmosphere, and
another 60 billion tons exchange between the vegetation and the
atmosphere. Compared to man-made sources' emission of about 5 to 6
billion tons per year, the natural sources would then account for more
than 95 percent of all atmospheric carbon dioxide."
Rain Forests while nice to have are not the only source for oxygen production on Earth. in fact the comprise a small amount of area globally to influence much. 50% of oxygen production is done in the oceans. I am not saying I don't care about rain forests but that they are dynamically changing naturally and if they were gone our climate would not be as effected as some would have you believe.
These are just a few points.
I really have to agree with retrotrancer. I too remember the pending ice age scare. One of the large contributors to this movement was Paul Ehrlich who was also the dooms-dayer about a population boom. He has been proven so many times, and yet honored by the Sierra club, world wildlife fund, and numerous other organizations. He then in the 80's was talking about global warming not cooling. They have no clue. Read the book Eco-scam from by Ronald Bailey. This is the thing with libs, it doesn't mater if you are right or wrong just if you feel and are caring.
Environmental extremist just don't know the facts. They are so far off on so many points it is unbelievable. I have to believe the only people who still believe in this stuff just have not taken the time to really look into it but just listen to the info given to them from the Media or liberal agendas.

I think the Dems are more attuned to an unreal idealistic vision of nature than Reps are.
Dems thought eliminating fire access roads and stopping logging were great. Reps thought that was irresponsible. Lack of logging and roads resulted in huge conflagrations all over the Western states. Oops.
Dems think that ANWR is some idealistic pristine wilderness. Where the drilling is to take place is flat, empty tundra, and is only a small percentage of ANWR. The Inuit people who live there want the drilling. The US people want the drilling. And yet, it is held up by some misguided idealism.
As for Al Gore, he doesn't know a burro (a$$) from a burrow (hole in the ground) regarding the environment. His rants sound exactly like the Unabomber. His Kyoto treaty would have had a huge negative economic impact without producing a meaningful benefit. And this current kick is not supported by science.
No, we are not less aware, we just understand it better, and don't fall for hare-brained scare stories. It ain't rocket science.

The earth has been warming up and cooling down for hundreds of millions of years. Back in the 1970s, many top scientists were saying the earth was cooling. Thirty years later, they're changed their story. Now we're headed toward global warming.
The fact is, there's no scientific proof human beings are the cause of climate change.
You know who makes money on environmental issues? Fearmongers on the left. They try to scare people into thinking the earth is doomed, hoping these uninformed folks send them money. It's a racket, a scam.
Scientists can't even accurately tell me what the weather will be like next week. So I'm suppose to believe them when they talk about what's coming in the next 50 years????

Hey slick, people were saying the earth was cooling down 30 years ago. The scientists were saying we should think about melting the polar ice caps to stop it. The earth may very well be warming. But we didn't cause it, and we can't stop it.
~~~
The poster above finished: "Well, I can tell you, the Earth's getting a heck of a lot warmer."
Since when? Back in the 1970s, the 'SKY IS FALLING' boneheads were warning about the coming ice age. So you intellectual geniuses have changed your minds, eh? Do me a favor? Pick a lie, and stick with it.
Most Republicans, as said above, basically deny global warming exists. Well, I can tell you, the Earth's getting a heck of a lot warmer.
I'm not that old, but I can tell you that here in the northwest, the last few summers have been warmer than in the years past. True, we've had abnormally warm summers in the past, but it seems to be a trend now. The average temperature has raised, and unless Superman deliberately pointed the sun directly at the northwest, Global Warming IS taking place.
Oh, and while some Republican government scientists still deny it, it's been proven that Global Warming is taking place.
Hey amg503, a heck of a lot warmer, where did you get your data. The average temperature has risen but its been less than one degree Celsius. Yeah that's a lot huh. And warmer than when? Records that were recorded hundreds of years ago? How accurate can they be? I was just watching a program on the Discovery Channel about a mini ice age that took place between the 14 and the 19 centuries. Well if that was the case then all the data from then can't be used now can it? Get your facts straight, do some research of your own. Use that internet for something other than proving how ignorant you are.
Actually, Republicans are about equal with Democrats on environmental concerns. The catch is that Republicans and Democrats disagree so vehemently with each other on how to deal with it.
For example, Al Gore is pushing the global warming issue but most Republicans are more in line with the global cooling point of view.
No, Democrats just have a knee jerk reaction instead of a thought out one, like the Republicans. Most of the time, you can have development without significantly harming the environment due to technological advances, but Democrats almost always ignore this and are against anything that USED TO harm the environment, even though it no longer does.
Case in point: ANWR
Democrats want to try to figure out how to tax legitimate businesses out of existence to fund programs that say that they are addressing environmental concerns, but really only give jobs to their friends and potential Democrat supporters. Democrats do nothing about anything except raise taxes and throw money at problems, and Republicans come up with solutions that are realistic and focused and meaningful, but will be criticized by Dems for not going far enough.
