How thick are the bars? If they are quite thin, no the alarms won't go off. I have a belly ring, tongue ring and 3 piercings in each ear, I have never been asked to take them out or has the alarm gone off. But they are all quite small, including the bars. The alarm went off for something in my bag (a little metal jewelry box for my rings) and other stuff. Accidentally forgot I had a fork in my bag before, LOL. Bottle of water. etc.. Also, sometimes I swear when you walk through those machines, they just beep randomly. Because recently I had an international flight and I had no pockets or any material whatsoever on my clothing. I had skin tight leggings on and the smallest cotton shirt with slip on ballet flats and no jewelry. Yet there's all these people with big jackets and shoes but it beeped when I went through. Security doesn't take long. Depends what country and airport you are in though. Also, the time of day definitely. Sometimes at certain airports, there's a whole pile of flights around the same time and it takes longer to get through security as the lines can be very long. Montreal airport I must say was shockingly slow last year when I went through. I had a night flight.. And the line was so outrageously long for the international boarding pass/ passport check that a lady who worked for one of the airlines had to come grab people me and other people from the line and to the front or we would of missed our flight. This was around 7pm and there were quite a few flights taking off. More than 5 minutes? Umm, you will be standing in line for at least this long.

I don't think it's a dumb question!
The metal detector is set off by a relatively large area of metal (it is inducing a currentin the metal). Even a large number of gold teeth (or metal crowns) will not set the detector off. Similarly a small belt buckle (like mine) does not set the detector off but a large one (like the cowboys wear) does set it off.

Only metal goes off..but if you have a Grill like Nelly and other guys with that kind of fame, I don't think you need to worry about a metal detector...Siren

I don't know about quanitiy, but I don't think that gold jewlery sets it off or most married people would have to remove their wedding bands as most are gold.
