We've gone from a society that had to physically work hard for everything it got -- farming, fishing, lumbering, a gazillion housework chores -- to a society that sits in its car and drives up to a window to have food handed over. Then we drive home and sit on our couches.
We expend the least physical energy of any society in history, but we eat the most calories per meal that there has ever been. Serving sizes are huge!
The bottom line: our excess weight is a direct result of our own excesses.

Trans fat and processed sugar. Overeating is a problem, but the type of food is the worst of two evils. Eating fried processed trans fat and drinking beverages that can dissolve a steak and clean car batteries (coca cola) will promote obesity. Also, commercials promote bad eating habits. There isn't a profit in promoting healthy food, only fast food or junk food. Our kids put pressure on parents to buy Trixs, Coco puffs, and the like. They don't want Raisin Brand or Corn Flakes, that stuff isn't cool to them. So, there is a lot of pressure from different areas that help in obesity.

The problem is due to a concentration on carbohydrates in a diet. In societies where income is low and poverty is high, carbohydrates are a filling and inexpensive way to stay fed. In societies where income is high, carbohydrates are convenient. Restaurant like them because they are inexpensive, filling and therefore increase their profit margin
