Yes. Wirelles just means that your router will not use cables to connect to your computer. However in big cityes there are a lot of hotspots (free wirelless routers) that can give you internet for free. Depending where you live, you should invest in only a wirelless card for your computer and have a go. If you don't have a free hotspot near you, that means that an ISP internet connection is still required.

Router routes your original intrenet connection. You still need ISP and their modem to use a router.

A wireless card is require for you to use WiFi (aka wireless connection). First you have to find an ISP in your area who will provide you direct wirless connection to your residence. Its a rare case there are ISPs around you who would give you that service, but its not impossible. It wont be dirt cheap or cheap like dial up for sure. Most wireless ISPs will give you broadband connection and its definitely more expensive than dial up specially with wireless reciver rentals and stuff.

Technically you don't need an internet connection of your own to hop onto a wireless network, but it's not always legal. For example, if you bought a wireless PCI adapter and hopped onto your neighbors broadband account, he/she may not like it as he/she is having to pay for internet service that you are leeching from. It's stealing.
But on the other hand, if you had a notebook with a wireless net adapter installed, you could go to places like a public library, Starbucks, etc and jump onto a hotspot. There is a citywide WiFi 'blanket' that everyone has access to, but the bandwith is pitiful.
To answer your question in the simplest of terms, you would need to spend approx $75-100 on your WiFi equipment (wireless router and network adapter), and then install an internet connection in your home. Cable works the best where I am, but I have seen DSL run pretty fast (as long as you are within 1.9 of their remote access point).
To install: Run cable (or phone line) from your wall into the back of your broadband modem. Run ethernet (RJ45) cable from modem to wireless router. Insert disc from PCI adapter into computer and install drivers. Turn computer off (not restart, but shutdown). Install PCI card (MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW EVERY SAFETY PRECAUTION THERE IS! I AM NOT GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU GETTING HURT! IT'S BEST TO HAVE THIS DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL). Turn computer back on. Your OS should detect the new wireless adapter.
Follow the rest of the directions from the manuals that came with your hardware on how to set up wireless security (so that neighbors and/or wardrivers can't leech). I recommend WPA, but 128bit WEP works as well.

Hope this helps!

Yea, you can use a router and a DSL connection to go wireless. Also you need a wireless card for your laptops and desktops. AOL high speed is some $26, but Yahoo! SBC & ATT are having a specal offer for just $13. however if you want good speed i would recommend you to use Time Warner Cable. Although it is expencive it is really FAST!!!!

There are many types of service (dial up, cable, dsl, satelite) but you still need an ISP to provide the service. I think you are confusing a wireless connection with satelite service. You can have a wired or a wireless connection with any of the above types of service.
