Cell phones have revolutionalized the way we run our world. Any person can be contacted no matter where they are. That is a big seller with parents-to know where you're childeren are and what they're doing and who they're with.
Conversations can take place in the bathroom, on the roof, at work, and wherever you happen to be-as long as the phone is working. :-)
But for our childeren, we need to keep them in check, and keep them safe. A cell phone(for a responsible child) would be the ideal gift. It would teach them the responsibility of having one and keeping track of important things.

The only way I'd buy a cell phone for that age group would be one that allows them to only call mom and dad, maybe grandma. To use to get a ride home or in extreme emergencies. No calling friends. It's just not necessary at that age.

Cell phones have grown in popularity with children between the ages of 8-10 for a couple of reasons. The first of these reasons is attributed to the parents. Parents now see a level of safety, which they never experienced in the past, behind their children being able to carry and use cell phones in case of emergency. With the direction society has taken with the increase in child abduction, drive-by shootings, rape, molestation, drinking and driving and various other offenses, parents have been left with little to no choice but to try to properly protect their children by giving them a way to contact the police or their parents if they are in danger.
Another reason for the increased usage of cell phones by children between the ages of 8-10 is that, cell phone use has been seen as a vital part of society today. In the eyes of a child, the use of a cell phone is seen as "cool" now, and viewed as a necessity to a large portion of these children. Through the parents eyes, cell phones are now less expensive than other popular fads such as MP3 players or IPOD's, and they feel that for these reasons and the safety reasons, it is easier for them to allow their children to use and own cell phones. Thanks in large part to such introductions (by cell phone providers) as the "family plan", parents and their young children have easy accessibility to each other at all times as well as the freedom to call friends, siblings, police, etc. at anytime and with little inconvenience to the household.

It gives them a first feeling of Independence. They are free to talk whenever and wherever they like wihout parents being around. The Market for younger callers is out there to allow kids to hand with freinds and be abel to call Parents (right). Also, once one person has one, everyone needs one to fit in or be cool, as everyone stated before.

Children need to be accepted...EVERYONE (everyone that is cool that is) has a cell phone, their cool older brothers and sisters, their friends, even their parents (well, that would probably turn them off of cell phones!) But in any case, it makes them feel grown up and special, important if you will. Kids like to belong and feel special!

Because kids are marketed to also. However they do emit radiation that kills brain cells and their brains are still undeveloped so it's that much more harmful for a child.

because you can have your own phone with out any one listening in on your calls , there are games to play , some have cameras ,everyone has one , they are cute to carry around, you can personalize it your self , some has Internet on it, you can talk any time you want when your mom is on the phone you don't have to wait to use it, you can talk it with you.
