I don't have the money to get a lawyer and I was told I could fill out guardianship papers and turn them in to our local court house.

Check with the probate court, I picked up the papers from them when I applied for guardianship of my nephew. Ours is at the town hall. I did have to have them notarized, and banks aren't willing to do it, so I had a lawyer's secretary who was a notary do it. It was pretty cheap, and easy. The biggest expense was filing the papers -$150.00

Did you check at the courthouse and see if they have the forms? Laws are different from state to state, in Iowa the court has to appoint you. Are there any free legal services in your area? Like volunteer lawyer project or Legal Services Aid?
