My raises are automatic, either annually or with a promotion, and they are based on a standard forumula with levels and market based standards for the job. I like it that way! I HATE to ask for money.
I had a really bad experience in my last job, which was 10 years ago. I felt that I was doing double what my manager, basically doing his management job for him, and was getting paid very little. I went and asked for a raise, and was YELLED AT and belittled by the owner of the company. He said "HC, I can tell what kind of person you are. Always looking over your shoulder for another dollar and you'll never be satisfied that you're being paid what you're worth." I found another job ASAP after that, where I'm happy to report that I make three and a half times what I was making when I left there. They were taking advantage of me, and trying to make me believe they weren't. That's abusive behavior.
If you're in the market for a raise, good luck!! If you think you're worth more, you're probably right. Go for it, and if somebody tries to make you feel guilty about it -- don't wear it!!!

It was offered to me.. within 90 days "prove yourself phase".. but it was a very small increase.. so I thought, ok.. well at least the pay isn't as bad as it was before...
Then within 6 months after the first initial "atta girl" raise, the manager decided to retire, and gave me all gold stars to be her replacement...
Manager.. Not what I wanted to do with 3 small children growing.. got out of management for exactly that reason..so the board decided since I was so highly recommended I should get something for being who I am.. and made a position for assistant manager.. little raise, LOADS more responsibilities to cushion the new boss in the door of the unknown duties I had barely grasped all of before the old boss retired.
I have never been turned down for a raise, but I never asked for one unless I really felt I was worth it either, which plays on your own self conscience of your abilities and leaves you open to beat yourself up for the areas you don't feel good about yourself in...
Just remember how others see you is a whole lot different than you see yourself, and you will always be more critical of you than others will be.. but if you know your abilities and are dealing with a stagnant company.. move on ..that is the only raise you will ever receive, your own self appreciation to not be neglected, overlooked, and abused for their greedy ideas of how to run a business.

Offered as part of a counter-offer from another company. I have never had to ask for a raise but I am sure the time will come. My husband and asked and only been turned down once. That's also the day he told them to shove it (with a few other choice phrases) and left.

My husband's raises are automatic. However, along with the raises come increased insurance rates. In the long run,we still come out ahead with the annual raises...but it just stinks to get a raise and then have it going back into insurance premiums.
When I was working full time,I was always offered my raises in a timely manner. I never felt it had been too long since my last raise. My employers realized how important I was to their business and I never had to be concerned with not getting a raise.
What really stinks is that one time while working for the county...due to budget cuts...my salary was also cut!
I had never in my life heard of a pay decrease! Needless to say,I didn't stay there much longer.

I was offered my first and only raise here where I am now. It was 6 months after I started working here. I got a buck....now it's been over a yr, and I haven't gotten another one. Right when I wanted to ask for one, they started laying people off. SOoo I knew I couldn't ask just then.
My boyfriend here at this job had to ask for his raise. He got a buck the first time, then he told them about a year later, that if they didn't give him at least a $1.50 more an hour, he was leaving. They gave it too him :O We were both really shocked.
At my very first job, I got a $1.00 raise every April. So that was cool :)

We receive an annual performance review every year at our anniversary date. I have been offered a aise and or a bonus in lieu of a raise at that time. I have not had to ask for a raise since I started my post college career.

I get a 5% increase every January, no matter what. That way I don't have to worry about asking and they don't have to worry about offering. It's automatic.
