You can tell a snake is a male or female by the length of the tail... If it is a female I believe the tail will be short and a little thicker to enable it to give birth easier.. A male will have a longer, skinnier tail. I may have gotten the two mixed up,but I bought my snake from a long time breeder and thats the info he gave me.

It depends on the snake. Some snakes you can tell by the anal spurs, the length of the tail, or sometimes even the color. With many other snakes like Ball Pythons, the only way you can tell is to have the "popped" or probed.
With popping, you apply pressure on the tail behind the cloaca until the hemipenes or female scent glands pop out, and you can tell by what pops out. With probing, you insert a metal probe in the cloaca toward the tail. Depending on how far the probe goes in will tell you if it is a male or female (males will probe further than a female). Either procedure should only be performed by someone experience because the snake can be seriously damaged if done improperly.

Having it probed or popped is the only 100% way to know for sure. Make sure you get someone that know what they are doing to do it for you.
Spur size, color, tail length are never accurate ways to tell and can be very misleading. For example we were at the pet store the other day and the worker flipped over a snake, looked at the spurs and told us male. We popped it and turns out it was actually a female.

i thought one of my pythons was a female for 2 years. it had all the signs of being one but i learned the the only true way you can tell is by an anal probe preformed by a herpatologist to be 100% sure. ITS A BOY!

they will have these spike looking things and that means they are a boy. I cant remember what they are called but they protrude out from the snake and thats how you know.
