in the weird psychological/****** up way this movie is. just nothing tooo abstract.

There are a few.....12 monkeys comes to mind or you can try fight club.....perhaps the usual suspects, all great movies.
There is also a french film called "High Tension" which has very similar twists as Donnie Darko, albeit much more graphic. A good watch you can find at your local Blockbuster.

I'd check out Primer. It's a weird little indie, made for $7,000 that won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Festival. No-frills filmmaking with a great story.

12 Monkeys is really cool. I also love Fight Club. Neither is quite as psychological as DD, but both are really awesome and make you think.

try amazon's website. Sometimes you can get good ideas by looking up a movie & then they list "people who liked this also liked...".
In the meantime, I'd suggest Memento.
