Oh what a lot of bull.... it has nothing to do with conspiracies, dictatorships or the government...

When you say "downloading", you're talking about getting a free copy of a commerical product. Somebody made that product, and expects to get paid for doing so. What you're doing is stealing... but it's happening in such numbers that it's just not practical to prosecute every individual who scores a few bootleg movies...
The movie. music and game industries are directing their energies to proscuting the people who turn theft into a big business.... they steal the product and pass it on because they think its cool to "beat the system", or because they have some convoluted political agenda...
Now, can I come by and take somehting that you worked for? Your car? Is it OK If I take that and give it to a stranger on the street? You wouldn't mind? It is, after all, politically correct ... :-)

Of course not. This is what happens when a regime tries to be against the will of the people. In this case the RIAA. People revolt and won't stop because the rules are bad. They try to impose some rules who really defy the will of the people. Fighting against the people with money/lawyers is called dictatorship in some parts of the world. This will not and can't stop what really people want to do and think. It will scare some, put in jail some but will not make people think differently.

You've got a point. You're probably not going to get prosecuted over it. But it is wrong when you really think about. Take music for example. When you steal Metalica they loose a potential sale and that's money out of their pocket. Who cares right? The guys are already richer than God. I agree. **** em. But when you do the same thing to an underground band that may only sell 50000 copies of their album then you're actually stealing from working musicians who really need the sale to make rent. Anyway.

OK, you wanna a know a secret? Whenever you download stuff take it OUT of your shared file and move it somewhere else on your computer. If you do this nobody will put you in jail. As long as you clear your shared file asap you'll be fine.
It's only the stupid people who have their whole music and stuff in their shared file, then they wonder why they're sentenced to jail.

You'd be surprised at how many people are NOT downloading illegal movies, software, and music. Don't let "everybody does it" make you think what you're doing is okay.

I do download movies and music I can't find anywhere else, but I prefer to legally purchase what and where I can. It's a good feeling to know you're all squared up.

The government doesn't want you to know...
Chances are, if you're careful, you won't get caught. Only download a certain number of files at a time, and space your downloads out.

This man in my town was downloading and allowing others to upload from his list from imesh. His Internet service provider turned him in. They subpoenaed the Internet service provider so that is why they turned him in. He contacted an attorney and they settled out of court for $25,000. So be careful they are cracking down.

No ... not nearly everyone is being put in jail. Most people who are caught are being fined. And most people that are getting caught are sharing files (uploading) not just downloading.

They'd have to contact the ISPs for your information, and ISPs don't like to lose customers. Plus, finding a specific person who pirates music is like finding a needle in a haystack.

No, they will not everyone in jail. It is unlikely that they will put anyone in jail. However, from time to time people will be sued by the record companies/recording industry.
