Sounds like a Parson's spider, but I can't be sure. If I knew what area of the States you were in and had a photo, I might be able to better identify it.

Maybe this link will help you: http://www.spiderzrule.com/commonspidersusa.htm. I used it to identify some wolf spiders, which seem to have run of my house.

A Black Widow has a red almost hour glass shape on its belly/back, but I am not familiar with the description of your spider, its best to either call an exterminator or look it up and do some research before you think its safe to leave alone. Most poisonous spiders are not something you want to play with.

They are not Black Widows, but probably are harmless jumping spiders. It sounds like the one that lives behind my pc.

In the TX Brown Recluses are dangerous. Black Widows have a reputation worse than the truth.

Get a bug spray and spray your basement. I'm not sure what kind those spiders are that you just described but I hate all spiders in general, so it doesn't matter what kind they are. Just spray them, it's better to be safe than sorry. I heard that black widow spiders are venomous. So be careful.

they are black widows and yes they are dangerous, try calling an exterminator ... if they go upstairs they might get into your stuff and if one bites it is enough for you to get poisoned .
