Automatic trannys are notoriously difficult to diagnose (they are, after all, one of the most complex pieces of purely mechanical engineering in the world), but my guess would be there's either something wrong with the layshaft or the gear itself. Since it's a Hyundai, I wouldn't expect repairs to cost more than $1K, but that's assuming A.) your mechanic is on the level, B.) I'm at least close to diagnosing the problem correctly, and C.) it's even possible to repair. My crappy old BMW has the type of transmission that no one ever wants to repair. They'd rather just stick a whole new transmission in there and charge me $7K. Be prepared for the worst so that you won't be taken off-guard.

Worst case, your transmission is hosed, and that's going to cost anywhere from 750.00 to 1500.00.
Best case, something has been disconnected, and getting a mechanic to look at it and reconnect is going to be approximately 200.00.

Sounds like transmission problems, which can be costly. Make sure you get estimates.
