i know things list 3rd and fourth generation ipods. is this one of those? also, and good and cheap iPod covers around?

It's 4th gen.
The 3rd generation had a wheel with 4 separate buttons.
The 2nd gen had higher capacity than the 1st gen.
The 1st gen had capacities of 5/10/15 GB and had a mechanical scroll wheel.

if its with a click wheel then its a fourth gen. else its 3rd. for cheap ipod covers i would suggest searching on ebay
