Because despite popular belief George Lucas didn't have a full story back in the mid seventies when he started venturing to make make Star Wars. He had some ideas don't get me wrong but the newest trilogy wasn't something he had on the shelf.

that's driven me mad since i saw the stupid new star wars movies. it is a nice coincidence for lucas that obi had a weird look on his face in the first star wars or it would be a huge plot error. now, it is just vague. he could have hit his head too many times.

He didn't remember ever owning a droid...and I would take it all astromechs look alike.

Also, let's figure obiwan wasn't showing luke all of the info upfront anyway.

AND let's face it, lucas painted himself into a bit of a corner.

he might have

when Obi Wan sees R2 in his house on Tatooine he says "I don't recall owning any droids" but he had a funny look on his face like he knew more than he was letting on.
