Something noone ever tells you is that a "u" in this sense is an inch and 3/4. It's controlled by the spacing of the screw holes on the standard vertical rack. So, a 1U server is 1.75 inches high, and a 2U server is twice that.

The 2 U server probably uses more power, puts out more heat, and has more stuff packed into it. But you have to look at the specifics.

It's the thickness of a server. 1u is 1 unit thick and 2u is 2 units thick. A rack system have spacings of 1 unit increments for the server railing to mount a server.
