Each of the 8 groups have 4 teams. The 4 teams play each other once - 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss. After all the group matches are completed, the top 2 teams from each group move on to the knockout stages. Should there be a tie within a group between teams moving into the knockout stages, the following tie-breakers are used:
1) Goal differential (goals scored minus goals allowed)
2) Total goals scored
3) Head-to-head result
4) Drawing of lots (in essence, a random drawing - think coin-flip)
Once the top 2 teams from each group are set, pairings for the knockout stages are setup. Group A's top seed will face Group B's 2nd seed, and vice versa; Group C's top seed will face Group D's 2nd seed, vice versa, and so on. Top seeds from Groups A, C, E, and G are on one side of the knockout bracket, with top seeds from Groups B, D, F, and H on the other side - this means it is possible for the top two teams from one group to face each other again in the World Cup Finals.

Each country plays the other three countries in the group. 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie. Top two advance; tiebreaker is goal differential in all games, then goals scored.
After the group stage, the 16 teams go to the knockout round, where Group A winner plays second in Group B, Group B winner plays second in Group A, etc. There is some crossover in the quarters.

The two first teams in each group qualify for the next phase where they will play against another group. For example the first one in Group A will play the second in, for example, group D. the secon in Group A will play the first in Group D. Get it?
