Do you think woman should be treated just the same as a man firefirefighter? Why is it that women are looked at as wanting to be macho or something and men are looked at as heroic if they want to be a firefighter?

I think women have the right to do any job they want to. The problem I see is that often the rules are changed to make getting the job easier for women which is not fair at all, not to those others that are participating and in the terms of fire fighting not fair to the people and property you are there to save.

Physical strength requirements are lower for a women to become a fire fighter than a man to become a fire fighter. For example if a man has to be able to pull a 180 lb dummy 20 yards... a female may only have to pull a 145 lb dummy 15 yards. This is not safe!!! Not to your co-workers and not to the people who depend on you to save their lives.

For example say a female is my partner, and I get knocked unconscious by falling debry... if she JUST made that 145 lb pull, there is no way in heck she could drag me out of there.

So I believe that yes women should be in the fire service... But the criteria should be the criteria no matter what... sex, race, age, etc. I think it is not safe and not fair to anyone to have double standards.

There are lots of things that women are far Superior at doing then men. Womens bodies are better built to handle G-Forces. Therefore they typical make better fighter jet pilots over men.

Womens bodys on average were just not designed to do the physical work that mens bodies were designed to do. Its just simple physics. Men typical have more muscle mass than women and therefore are better suited at doing strenuous and labor intensive work.

If a woman can do the job and be on par with the average worker in that field then I see no problem what so ever in having them. Its just when there is that double standard that I start to worry.

Some things women are better at doing than men, and vise verse. Thats just the way it is. Has nothing to do with men wanting to keep women down, or men feeling Superior. Its just simple physics. As a side note... women are usually a bit smarter than men... :)

Women fire fighters are just as "heroic" as men fire fighters!!! Sex has nothing to do with heroics and bravery. Fire fighters are there to do a job, and do a job well!

I know some women firefighters that are just as good if not better than some of the men firefighters. BUT, i still am not sure they should be treated the same, as i feel a woman's body is made different and can't always handle the same strengths as a man can in lifting weight. Although sometimes they are more emotionally equipped. I think it's a good combination of strengths and weaknesses which we all benefit from. I think the reason people look at women as wanting to be macho, because of the old male stignatism of woman's place in the home. And they look at men as heroic because of the seriousness of the job.

My dad is Chief of a small voluntary fire dept. All though women can be as tough as men, I think the movie "GI Jane" sums it up. It is not us it is them(the men). Men are protective of women and firefighting is a dangerous job. Men will die for a women that cannot be saved. With that said, there are five women on the dept. but only one who is tough as nails and one of the nicest women I know. She has a heart of gold and when my parents house burned to the ground, other than my dad, she fought hardest for us to save anything. Women are looked at as "wanna be"macho because it is a dirty, dangerous job that for many years has been considered a mans job. Hats off to all firefighters! Women or men! Be it a life they save or a irreplaceable heirloom that the fire does not get the chance to burn they are all heroes!

I believe in equal rights, hell yeah! I don't think it's a macho think at all. All the men AND women that serve for the fire dept. don't make half as much money as they should for the work they do and the selflessness they give to save other peoples' lives. You're not doing this to prove anything to anyone, so get out there and do your best!!! Kudos to you for being brave enough to take on such a feat!

Women should not do professions that require a lot of strength. It is a man's job. Plain and freakin simple.

Women's lib has gone a bit over the deep end. Please don't see me as a jerk, here. I am pointing out what we all know in our hearts.
