I think it's quite normal to leave the key at the reception, when leaving the hotel, still today - depending on the hotel.

I'm actually used to doing so myself - except in low class touristic hotels with 100s of rooms, or for a very short time.

Because that is the way it used to be done. Things have changed. But some hotels still make you leave it there.

Now that is a good question.
I guess cause years ago they use to do it that way.
That was how the maid knew the room was empty to clean.
