umm... his voice sounds kind of like a lot of bands from the 80's but the postal service I think sounds like a lot of new wave bands from the 80's

I'd go back further than the '80's - possibly the '70's. Their name is taken from a song by the Bonzo Dog Band, formerly the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, with hits you've never heard of like "Down on Jollity Farm" (my favourite)...and "Death Cab for Cutie". If DCFC like Bonzo Dog Band, then they are ultra cool misfit freaks of nature and their musical decade of influence is as immaterial to them as revisiting history is to Dr. Who. Which is very material indeed!

I think they are probably influenced more by the whole Seattle music scene, which really blossomed in the 80's, so yes, I guess you could say they are.
