Top 8 by FIFA's rating system (including performance in last two World Cups and Coca-Cola ranking over the last three years) were given #1 seeds, with the host country automatically being one of the 8 (Germany would have been anyway). By this rating, the top 8 were Germany, England, Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, France, and Spain. Germany was placed in Group A and defending champion Brazil was put in Group F. The other 6 were randomly drawn into their 6 groups.
The remaining 24 teams were divided into 4 pots, 2 with 8 teams, 1 with 7, and 1 with 1. Serbia was placed in a special pot and drawn to one of the groups headed by a non-European side, so that there would be no more than 2 European teams in the same group. The remaining 8 European teams were placed in Pot C. Pot B contained the 5 African teams, the two remaining South American teams, and Australia, drawn such that the two South American teams wouldn't be put into groups headed by Argentina or Brazil. Pot D had the 4 Asian teams and the 3 remaining CONCACAF teams, once again with the understanding that none of the CONCACAF teams would go into Mexico's group, and no team would be drawn to the group that already had Serbia, since that group would have been full.
When each team was drawn into a group, it was also given a number (2, 3, or 4) for scheduling purposes.

It's a sorting by chance. First they rank, the teams by their results and determine the best 8 teams, those teams become head of groups. Afterwards they randomly sort which group belongs to which head of group (for example, Germany group A, Mexico group D). When that's already settled, they classify the rest of the qualified teams by their region (UEFA, CONCACAF, etc) and then they sort those teams in the different groups. I guess they have like containers or something with the teams inside and without looking they pick one, and do the same but with the groups. So, in a few words they determine the heads of the groups and they randomly sort the rest of the teams in each group

Basically the top 8 sides i.e. Brazil, England, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Mexico, France, and Argentina (for this year, according to FIFA seedings) are divided into different groups and are put at the top of their group. Other nations were drawn randomly and according to geographical factors. There musn't be two European teams in one group and for non-European teams there musn't be more than one representing that particular nation in a particular group (excluding the top 8 seeds).

They have some teams which are leaders like Brazil, Italy, etc acording to their raking in the FIFA`s rank of teams. They give each leaders a Group (A,B,...). The rest of the Group is choosen by draw (at random, therefore).

They do draws to figure out what team will be in which group. The host country (in this case Germany) always plays the first game.
