Nextel

NEXTEL!! by far. We have had other brands/services. This has been the most durable and best service we've ever had. NEXTEL uses motorola and they are phenomenal. They make their phones for NEXTEL for construction use. Which means you can practically drop it from a tall building and it work. My brother in law works for a paving company and they had dug something up with a backhoe and his phone fell off of him and got buried and when he finally figured out what had happend they had to unbury the phone and it still worked. Needless to say I let my daughter play with mine and she drops it consistently from a shopping cart and I've never had one minutes trouble out of it. That doesn't count all the times I've dropped it, lol. NEXTEL service is also awesome. Don't mess with perfection. They were the first ones to come up with direct connect/walkie talkie. I rarely and I mean rarely have a dropped call. The network is always great. I wouldn't switch to another phone service if it was free...lol. The other good part I forgot to mention was the fact that these phones charge up in less than a half an hour. Full power. It takes about 2 days for my phone to die but only a few minutes to charge it...love it!! HTH :)

Verizon is the best carrier I've had so far. As for actual phone models, I'd say go for either a Samsung, Motorola, or a Nokia. They are all excellent brands. I've used models for all 3 and never had a problem.
Whatever you do, stay away from T-Mobile. Calls are always dropped and you get minimal reception everywhere. I changed to Verizon like 4 years ago and things have been great.

If you are like me, then you use the cell phone only for close family/friends and don't talk a lot. As such, I use TracFone.

TracFone Pros:
- no contract
- no sign up fee
- no monthly bill
- inexpensive phones (my Nokia choice is GREAT and cost $19.99 at Target)
- pay only for the pre-paid minutes you use
- minutes carry-over
- pre-paid minutes can be purchased everywhere - on-line, Target, eBay, drug stores, Safeway, etc.
- all cell phone towers are YOUR towers (time is leased from carriers)

TracFone Cons:
- TracFone web page is sub-par (unclear, little help, vague)
- customer service is polite, but in all honesty, ignorant
- customer service hold times are bad
- customer service departments seem out-of-sync with each other and one gets "handed-off"
- must "renew" minutes every couple months or so, depending on the type of pre-paid card you purchase
- per minute cost can be expensive (25 cents/minute, more or less depending on how many minutes you pre-pay for)

If you are not sure, you may want to try it like me. Here's what I've done. Someone I knew that was using TracFone referred me via their automated referral form on-line. I then bought the $19.99 phone at Target (comes with 10 pre-paid "units"**). Activate the phone over the Internet and you'll get an additional 10 pre-paid units. Up to 3 business days later, I received an e-mail with free 120 pre-paid units from TracFone for being a referral from my friend (FYI, he also received a free 120 units for referring me). The e-mail gives a code you put into the phone.

So, for $19.99+tax, I got a new phone and a total of 140 free units. I figure, if I hate it, I'm out only $19.99 and I got to use a new phone and talk for 140 free minutes anyways.

Incidentally, another of my friends liked the idea. I referred him and I got another 120 units. Now I have 240 units - all for $19.99. I absolutely can't lose. I like the phone, the coverage and the signal strength so I am staying with TracFone once I use up all this free time.

** "unit" is equal to 1 minute. They call it unit because when you are roaming, they charge you two units/minute. Your home area is determined when you sign up.

P.S., if you'd like to try it, let me know and I'll be happy to refer you (tihlfc@yahoo.com)

Good luck!

I feel that Sprint is the best. I live in the CHicago area and I have never had a dropped call or bad connection. No complaints in 5 years. Plus I have only had 3 phones and they have all lasted way beyond the 1-2 year mark.

I prefer Cingular for cellular service, and I love how the Motorola Brand Cell Phones work!

Ok she asked "brand" not provider lol. I have verizon which I love, but I got the LG 8100.... its awesome!!! Its pretty compact and plays MP3s. Very versatile and the camera is great too. Or you can get the newer LG that has an actual keypad, but its a bit bulky. I've never had any complaints about LG! Hope it helps!

what are you looking for as in "best"? if you need quick calling or a computer based phone nextel would be the best because of their walkie-talkie features and blackberrys. if you want camera phones i would probably say any verizon phone becasue they have a lot of those. all the other companys are about the same.
