I live in a townhouse. Last week they replaced the roof. We had no notice or warning until they were on the roof ripping it up. They stored plywood sheet in our back yard. The roofers didn't tell us to move our patio furniture or pots but thankfully they did or else there would have been tar and shingles all over them. I called our leasing agent and told him how inconsiderate I thought it was that they didn’t tell us. He said that they didn’t know (which I find hard to believe) and the owner was doing the improvements. I was just wondering whether we should have been informed.

If it requires the landlord to enter the home, then yes. If it is to the outside, then probably not.

It all just depends on the wording of the lease. If the lease requires 24 hour notice to be given to the renter before the landlord comes in, then they would have to let a tenant know ahead of time before doing improvements inside. But I think if ti's outside, then the landlord doesn't have to give notice.

I've been a manager of rentals before and I always let my tenants know when I was going to do improvements on the inside of their place. If it was outside (such as painting or repairing the siding) then I didn't let them know unless I needed them to move something (such as when I repainted the decks, they needed to move their stuff off the decks)

I believe that all states require a landlord/manager give 24 hours notice before entering your residence unless it's an emergency. If his improvements do not affect you, he doesn't have to tell you.

I remember once we were just sitting down to an early supper and the landlord showed up, unannounced, wanting to install smoke detectors in all the apartments. I argued, but he let me know that his time was valuable. Guess where he wanted the detector? On the dining room ceiling. I ran and got a plastic sheet to cover the table. Little bits of drywall were everywhere. The jerk.

Depends on the lease. If it is a house or an Apartment. When you signed your contract, there is a clause in there about this. Apartment complexes do give notice-unless it is emergency repair work.
