Devon and Cornwall are definitely beautiful. Stonehenge is sort of in the vicinity and is a relatively easy detour. Unfortunately, you can't walk around it like you used to so you're limited to a view from the road. I grew up in the countryside of Suffolk which is widely considered one of the most beautiful areas of England and we used to go to Devon and Cornwall on our family vacations. Suffolk is very beautiful... villages such as Long Melford and Lavenham have alot of old Victorian buildings, 15th century churches, antique shops and such. Unless you're going to go all the way north to Scotland, southern England is your best bet. British Rail offers travellers tickets valid for a few days or a week or more. It's a great way to see the countryside without the hassle of driving. Switching to a right-hand drive car and dealing with the winding English roads and roundabouts is challenging. Keep in mind that France is just a train ride away now, so if you have time, you can ride all the way to Paris, spend a night and come back the next day.

Well, it depends on your tastes, really. For example, I've been to London before, and I don't think that it's very pretty at all. (No offense to those that live there, it's just a personal tastes thing. I'm not into the dirty cities, crowds, and pollution and stuff.) There's pretty much two sides to almost any place you'll go. So, my advise is to try and find places that seem interesting to you, rather than trusting other people's opinions.
