All depends on what you're looking for, as in straight-line acceleration, controlled slides, or cornering ability. Sure you can have a little of each world with one vehicle, but you can also have everything with one.

If you're looking for cornering ability, I would recommend something like a Volkswagen GTI, Mazda RX8, or something of that league.
If you're looking for straight-line acceleration, engine swaps are the only way to go. Best I've ever seen is by taking a 1st gen Rx7 and swapping in either a small block ford or chevy v8. Very easy swaps to do, and only about 50-100 pounds heavier than the rotary. Plus, they make tons of power and are incredibly cheap to work on compared to the rotary.
And if you're looking for a good drift car, take any rwd car, and you can drift with it. Lately, it seems like american cars have started to enter the drift scene, with the high-torque v8s that can break traction very quickly. I'm not into drifting, so I havent researched it much.
If you're looking for a all-around good car, I've had the chance to own both a 2000 LS1 Z28, and a 1995 LT1 Z28, one with a 6-speed and one with an auto. Stock, both vehicles would easily do in excess of 150 mph, and still run easy 14s in the quarter mile. Handling was also exceptional for the size of car, but due to the power and light rear, it tended to try to powerslide in corners. Hope this helps:)

For drift I'd have to say either a FR (front engine rear wheel drive) or AWD car. The FR would probably be an S14 OR S15 Silvia or an RX-7 for an AWD id say the Lancer Evolution 8 or the R34 Skyline. And for street racing you want a good power to weight ratio, I'd have to say the RX-7, its rotary engine gets more power per liter than a cylinder powered car.

Any lightweight, rear wheel drive car can be turned into a drifter with the right setup. Same thing for street racing, you can get straight line speed out of anything with the right amount of money and expertise.

Any lightweight rear-drive car for drifting. (You will just waste a lot of money on tires and body repairs if you TRY to drift).

An american muscle car for drag racing, make sure its the V8 model. ^_^
