I think there are a couple of reasons not to draft Peyton with the #1 pick. For one, as stevenogdon said, it depends on the scoring system in your league and how important the QB position is. I don't think many people would argue that Peyton is one of the top tier fantasy QBs (along with a healthy Carson Palmer), but the other thing to consider is that if you take a QB at #1, what kind of runningbacks are going to be left on the board when your second round pick comes along? It would again depend on your league, but if you're in a 12 team league, there will not be much left in the way of a #1 RB, but there will be plenty of quality QBs left.

as valuable as manning is as a QB, it's really the difference in value between players at a position that counts, and that's why the top picks in fantasy football are almost always RBs instead of QBs.
basically the top 2-3 RBs are often more than 10% better than the next tier of 5-8 RBs, and then there's another big drop in quality.
for QBs, the top 2-3 QBs are often only 5% better than the next tier of 8-10 QBs.
so even if you don't pick Peyton Manning, there are another almost 10 QBs who are in the same scoring range, while if you don't get a superstar RB, it's harder to make up the gap.

They say he shouldn't be picked first because:
(1) He's never going to throw 49 TD's ever again, which is what it took for him to be the highest scoring player in Fantasy Football two years ago
(2) The difference, weekly, between Peyton and a guy like Kurt Warner or Jake Delhomme is negligible
(3) Because if they're smart Larry Johnson will be the #1 pick in every single fantasy league this year

You can take any QB and have a decent fantasy season. What you really need are skill position players RB/WR. This is why LaDanian Tomlinson, Marvin Harrison, Anquan Boldin, Larry Johnson would be safer and ultimately better picks than Peyton Manning. Plus with Edgerrin James going to Arizona, Peyton doesn't have a reliable running game which is what made him as successful as he was.

It is not really a question of quality in the quarterback but in the best chances of accumulating points. Quarterbacks have to throw for more yardage to attain the same or similar number of points. Furthermore, outside of fumbles, QBs can get negative points for interceptions. Picking a QB in the first round is not necessarily the best option. Running backs are most commonly taken in the first round due to their ability to rack up massive amounts of points for the fantasy team they are on.
Peyton Manning is a storng exception, but not an automatic one. With the current situation at runningback, Peyton may have to throw more than last year. This could be good ro bad, depending on how well defenses react to his timing. If you grab Peyton in the first round, make sure you have solid RBs lined up for Rounds 2, 3, and either 4 or 5 (backup).

If you take a QB #1 overall, you will probably lose your league. Unless the system favors QB's over RB's. In a general, free Yahoo! league, you should take a RB 1st (especially if you have top 5 pick) and probably 2nd. You can generally get top 5 WR's in the 3rd rd and top 10 in 4th. You might even get top 5 QB's in 5th or 6th round. However, you wont see a top 5 RB out of the 1st round and probably nothing inside top 12-14 RB in 3rd round or later.
Peyton is probably the only exception at QB this year to be taken in 2nd round. Because of C. Palmer's injury (may miss 1st few weeks, probably wont be at top of game until week 4 or 5), he shouldn't go until 4th-6th rounds.
QB's like Jake Plummer, Jake Delhomme, Trent Green, Steve McNair, Brad Johnson, David Carr, and Brett Farve, can probably be had after the 6th round.
Also, don't forget about Eli Manning, Byron Leftwich, Daunte Culpepper, Donovan McNabb, Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Drew Brees, Drew Bledsoe, and Kurt Warner are out there as well (but not in that order)

You don't win or lose the league in the first two rounds, you need to plan a draft strategy so you can get a full complient of players. Don't focus on the main guys you can find some fantasy studs by doing some research or maybe risking a lower pick on a guy that might have a breakout year.

I wouldn't pick a QB first round- i would definitely take a running back first- Larry Johnson if I'm lucky. Peyton is an awesome pick though- he is definitely a thrower. He carried a team last year and scored lots of fantasy points.

Peyton has proven himself year after year but it depends on two things. 1. Which position is most important in your league, and 2. Whether or not you think peyton can keep it up. I don't think he will be able to because he lost hisa running game when james went to arizona. I think a much better pick would be Ladanian Tomlinson a RB or Carson Palmer at the QB position.

most people won't pick a quarterback first overall because the position has so much depth. it's just as easy to get a serviceable starting qb in the 4th or 5th round. you should get a running back with the first pick overall (so the conventional wisdom goes) because there is a huge drop-off in the talent level after the first few rbs. probably i'd expect shaun alexander or ladanian tomlinson to be the #1 pick in most drafts.
wouldn't you rather have tomlinson, corey dillon, and say, jake delhomme in your backfield, as opposed to manning, rudi johnson, and warrick dunn?
