There are no mountain ranges actively forming along the East Coast, but plenty of ancient mountain ranges, as other respondents have observed (add the Laurentian Mountains of Eastern Canada).

This is because of Plate Tectonics. The East Coast is an example what's called a Passive Margin. There are no offshore tectonic events that would create mountain ranges inland. By contrast, the West Coast is an Active Margin, with offshore subduction in the Pacific ultimately responsible for the creation of mountain ranges inland (Andes, Rockies, etc.).

There are lots of mountains east of the Mississippi. The mountains east of the Mississippi are much older than the ones west. Therefore they have been weathered down much more. The Appalachians are "folded mountains" They were formed by a different mechanism the Sierra Nevadas, which are fault-block and Andesite mountains.
