It is already being sold for WAYYYY too much!! As does any new game system when it first comes out though. Sighhh.
Looks like it is pre-selling for $499.00 with an expected release/ship date of November 11th, 2006!

it will be 499$ for the 20 gb version and 599$ for the 60 gb version..........So what's with the price? Why is Sony selling the PS3 at the ultra-high prices of $499 and $599?
The differences are more than skin deep...though those chrome highlights on the 60 GB model sure bring out our shallow side
We know it hurts, but the key reason for the price is the next-gen DVD format war. The PS3 will be Sony's first big mass-market Blu-ray player, making it a key strategy to capturing the lead in the next-gen format war... but the bad news is, we'll all pay for that decision. The Blu-ray drive is probably the single most expensive component inside the PS3.
The $499 model has all the same core capabilities of its bigger brother, with a few key deficiencies. It lacks HDMI video output, a sacrifice that's meaningless to the vast majority of gamers (component cables work just fine, thanks). It's also missing the integrated Wi-Fi receiver, the multi-format memory card reader, and it's got a smaller hard drive.
There are also eye-catching chrome highlights on the pricier 60 GB model. We still think the 20 GB model looks plenty slick, however
Which PS3 model should I buy? The 20 GB or the 60 GB?
That's up to you. But unless you're ga-ga for HDMI video output, or you're dead-set on using integrated Wi-Fi functionality, the $499 model will be the better deal. It's the exact same machine, with a few less frills. And you can always install a bigger hard drive or Wi-Fi access later, if you want
Oh Yeah I almost forgot, the ps3 will release on november 11th in japan and it will release on november 17th for the rest of the world(Europe, US, Australia

Retailing for $599 is the system that most gamers will want when they head to the store this November. Featuring a Blu-ray Disc drive, a 60GB hard drive, four USB ports, memory stick slots, Ethernet and WiFi for Internet connectivity, and the highest-end video output (HDMI), the system is fully loaded. The cheaper version of the PlayStation 3 will retail for $499 and keeps the Blu-ray drive, but the hard drive is reduced in size to 20GB, there are no ports for memory sticks, and WiFi has been removed. The HDMI port is also absent. Unlike the two Xbox 360 versions, it's impossible to fully upgrade the basic version of the PlayStation 3. If you want to snag all of the advanced features, you must pick up the more expensive system at the outset.

There are two different prices, kinda like the XBox 360. The first is let's just say it plain and simple, BAD!! It has one-third the memory, no WiFi connection, it stinks. The full system has it all! The bad thing is that the full system will be $600! But it is truly the best buy because if you buy the core system ($500) you are not able to upgrade it to get all the components the full system has.

2 OPTIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE:
499.00- No media slot, no HDMI (must have if spending this much). and smaller hard drive.
599.00-has larger hard drive, and has all of the above.
***NOTE: if you buy the cheaper of the 2 then you will not be able to upgrade to the HDMI or Media slot or larger hard drive because all of that is incased and not removeable (unlike the Xbox 360). So if you want to buy the Cheaper one then you might as well buy the one for 100.00 more because chances are that later on you will want to get the xtra doo-dads. MY, ADVICE WAIT UNTIL THE NINTENDO Wii COMES OUT. WITH A CONFIRMED PRICE OF BELOW 250.00 DOLLARS AND THE COOL DESIGN ITS WORTH A LOOK!!!!!! Hope that helps.

700-800 Because of the Blue ray DVD player inside, all the chips, and the other add ons.
Anyway dont buy it right when it comes out because who know how many bugs will be discovered just look at the 360 ( the problem of it not working at all, the problem with after a few minutes of gameplay it over heats and frys ETC...
So just wait and keep your ear to the ground
