All I can suggest is that you type up a CV and distribute them around the shops in your local town centre or central London.
Given the time of year, a lot of workers will be off to uni so this creates more vacancies.
Check with each shop what their preferred method of application is, some may prefer you to drop in a CV, others may have a set application form for you to fill in.
My tip: When you go into a shop to hand your CV in, try and give it to a member of staff that looks pretty senior (management etc) and not the bored, young sales assistant stood behind the counter popping her gum. This may sound harsh but I worked in retail for 7 years so I know what I mean.
Or ask for a manager/supervisor when you go into each shop as they can advise you better as to the vacancy situation.
Good luck, you're highly likely to secure a job is generally there's quite a high turnover of staff in retail

Find a local charity shop near you, like;
Oxfam
British Heart Foundation
Cancer Research UK
Barnados
Scope
Whilst working at any charity shop does not have a salary, you may be able to claim the costs, or part of the costs, of your transport to or from work (i.e: bus or tube fair) and some can provide you with a lunch allowance.
Not only is it great fun, it looks good on your CV (for future employment) and you can make friends there.
Another advantage is that some give you discounts on purchases made in their shops.
You said you want a retail job and charity shops are retail. They sell clothes and generally everything. And as I said it looks great on your CV and you could use this to support any future applications for jobs in other clothes shops.
Most, if not all charity shops, are always in need of volunteers so you're almost guaranteed a job.

Many of the larger retail outlets recruit from recruitment agencies. Pop along to one of these. They'll help with with CV's interview techniques, the lot.
Good luck.
