Because it is easier to remember words then a random assortment of numbers.
Are you going to remember that 1-800-468-4688 is a porn line or that 1-800-HOT-HOTT is a porn line?
I haven't seen a commercial for Interstate batteries in over a decade but I still remember their phone number is 1-800-CRANK-IT

What's easier for you to remember during the 30 seconds that a commercial airs, a 7 digit number you've never seen or a word or two you already know? This way you can easily recall the number to dial later on if you do call the company. It's just one way to increase the effectiveness of certain marketing concepts.

Although the number sequence goes beyond the standard format, companies will use a number that is easier to remembre or sounds good in a jingle. The extra number will not effect the call when dialed.

The 1-800 numbers are toll free, they don't cost the caller money, and the companies think it is easier to remember the number if you know the name you are calling, and they believe more people will call their business if it is in that format. It is a marketing strategy.

But taxis are smarter then that. Many have a number like 777-7777 or 666-6666.
