Yes, it is an amusing word, the sound of it feels funny, the letters look funny, and the pickles called "gherkins" are definitely funny to see.

The little shadow character you chose as your avatar also calls to mind the tiny little Playboy Magazine cartoon character that was nicknamed "Gherkin." For her, the small pickled cucumber from which the name is taken might have been - well, something interesting, too.

The Oxford English Dictionary puzzles a bit over the origin of the word. OED speculates that term may have come to English via Dutch, but that it apparently originated in a Slavic tongue, eventually also making its way to a Greek and Arabic version. It seems at first to have been a name of a cucumber, and later became the name of the pickle made from that variety. The earliest English language mention cited in OED for it comes from Samuel Pepys' diary in 1661. Quite a distinguished lineage.

Pornstars are easily amused.
I thought some words were funny when I was a kid but I got used to them.
Now I'm so jaded that I don't laugh if someone say gherkin.
Except for the jerkin' my gherkin joke.HAHAHA

Are you amused more by large Gherkins or small Gherkins?

I am very amused. I like the way it just rolls off the tongue. Your tongue starts out at the top of your mouth then finishes towards the middle lower part of your mouth, caressing the back of your lower gums. It's a great word. I also like "Penelope".
