Probably didn't mess up the battery, but you could have killed some other electrical devices in your car (computer, alternator, lights, radio, etc.)

you caused a full load to be discharged into a small resistance (the wire) and it heated the plastic and caused a fire? Chances are the battery is OK, but I would replace it because it may have incurred a latent failure that could leave you stranded. A new battery is about 40 bucks.....much cheaper than having your ride crap out.

No...it wont kill the battery unless the battery exploded in which case you would not be sitting here asking this question....However...It is likely that you could have damaged your cars electrical system which is far worse than damaging your battery!

You are lucky it did not explode! If the battery will recharge then you did not destroy it. Connect it correctly and charge the battery. Use a load tester to determine if it is alive or dead.

You could fry all your electrical components. Such as instrument panel displays, cabin lighting, and anything that runs on electric power. Check you fuse to see if they have been blown. Hopefully, they did their job to prevent the catastrophe mentioned above.

Other than shocking yourself, the battery should be Ok, but do not do this again.Red to red, black to black or Pos. to pos. and neg. to neg or ground.
If you want to test your battery to see if it is still good, just try it again...just kidding
