Interest and real-ness do play a part, but I avoid all the social get-to-know-you or flirtation questions, and only go for those that are actually seeking information.
Being a teacher, I answer a lot in education, but I answer mostly in society and culture, and also I answer questions about marriage and divorce, dating, family and friends.
My aim is to be a village elder, a wise old Grandmother Spider figure. Living in urban Los Angeles, Yahoo Answers is the closest I can come to that right now! :)

Well with me I just look at like 10 quetions at at a time and if some of them interest me I answer them. It has alot to do with hoe well asked the quetion is to. lol
