... that will not only give directions to go from point A to point B, but also show interesting points worth checking out along the way?

I want to take a weekend trip from Baton Rouge to Nashville and I don't want to take the same route on the return as going up.

Streets and Trips, by Microsoft, is a very good program for planning trips. I use it all the time. Online, mapquest.com is very good. A little limited, but it's on-line and free.

Here's one idea:
Going to Nashville: I-55 thru Jackson and Memphis, I-40 to Nashville
Returning: South on I-65 to Birmingham, SW on I-20 to Meridian MS, SW on I-59 to Interstate 10
Total distance: 1189 miles

Memphis has lots of great stuff, including Graceland.

mapquest.com is usually what I use but they sometimes can give you some jacked up directions but usually will get you where you need to go. OR get out your handy map and a route your own trip I did that when I left Branson, Mo because I didn't want to take the same route mapquest.com gave me for my return trip.

google earth, you can download a version of it for free, but if you're looking for the details you mentioned i think you have to pay for that version of it.
