this is usually caused because of a dirty air filter,simply put ,the engine is suffocating,this causes excess gas use age,also check the grade of gas your using,this can sometimes make a difference too,a good filter to put in it is a k&n,they help increas mileage and performance.

Also, have your fuel injectors checked. Sometimes, dirty injectors can result in poor gas mileage. Usually this happens in autos that have more than 50k miles. If anything else, do a little research on what type of gas you're using and check to see if any recalls have been made on the Equinox that might be directly related to fuel problems.

It might need new spark plugs or if you recently started putting gas with ethanol in it this could also be the problem. If the car has a lot of miles on it (120,000 +) it could be getting wore out or need the valves adjusted.

Check your O2 censor. It mixes oxygen with your gas and if it isn't good then your gas mileage will go down the tubes.
