From my studies, Yes.
It would be a masive bost the the echonomy for the industral uses of the plant alone, the plant marijuana comes from is one of the greatest sorces for bio-fuel in existance and can be uses for nearly anything. It also makes the highest quality of paper, though the paper is not white.
Cannabis sativa can, and until recently has ben used in may ways, including all of the following; ship sails and rigging, fishing nets, flags, paper (even in bible making), rags, clothing, canvas for tents, rope, twine, paints, varnishes, lighting oil, medicines of all kinds, and even food. Hemp can and has been used as a nutritious food source and regarded, by many religions world wide (even Christianity) as a religious sacrament for thousands of years. In fact it is one of the most nutritious seeds on earth.
Cannabis produces four times as much pulp as tress in the same amount of area, and helps prevent soil erosion. Not only that but paper making with hemp makes less pollution than with wood pulp. Cannabis can be grown most anywhere and can help developing countries like Brazil find alternatives to cut and burn tactics for crop growing, witch are destroying the worlds rain-forests. Not only would this provide a reliable food source but would help stabilize there economy. Certain types of hemp can be used in reforestation, restoring nutrients to the soil. Hemp based bio-fuel is much less pollutant than oils and just as efficient, and unlike oil would not create an ecological disaster if spilt while in mass-transit. Finally there are few insects that can effect cannabis that are native to the US, making pesticides in Us based hemp farms almost unnecessary. By legalizing cannabis growth world-wide economies could flourish with the new found income and could end many problems. Not only that but it would take billions of dollars from criminals who sell it illegally.
Jack Herer believes in hemp so much that he has offered $10,000 dollars to any one that can prove that using cannabis as a crop could not supply humanity with everything it needs with out depleting the earths dwindling resources!
For recreational usesage though it would be debatable.... However it could be used as a masive bost to the goverment funding, simply by placing a hefty tax on it (even then it would be comprable to the price of tobacco if produced and sold legaly). The sell of ilegal Mariguana in the US makes a good 300~500 billion dollors a year.....Thats a lot of money taken out of the drug traders hands and given to the US, much of it could go back into fighting those bring harmfull adictive drugs into the US.
Medical research has proven that smoking of marijuana, even long term, is not harmful to health. Medical research has also proven that marijuana is not physically addictive, and is only mildly addictive psychologically. Most people that do smoke only do so on a casual biases. Illegal marijuana however is often mixed with other drugs purposely or in accidently tainted with other drugs witch make using the drug harmfull and addictive, however if it was leglized they could inforce the purity of the drug not alowing such practices to take place.
All together marijuana in recreational uses is safer and less addictive than both tobacco and alcohol. Marijuana could be, and in many countries has ben, esaly legalized with laws similar to that off alcohol (E.I. no DUI) if not for the bad reputation it has picked up from the media over the years.
EDIT- A fun fact, the decloration of indapedance is on paper created from hemp. And our frist president wrote a book on the care of the plant, personaly invinting the methods of triming it in order to produce more leaves for use in making hemp to sell or in order to produce more bud to smoke. He thought the plant was a key to US's economic future and that it would become a billion dollar crop, even going so far as making a law that if you farmed more than a serten amount of land that you HAD to grow some for hemp production.
EDIT- Another reson for making it legal is it being iligal has seported criminal activity. Just look at the probition. No one will ever win the 'war on drugs' by making them legal they can control and regulate them, fine them and tax them, and monitor them. It would put a stop most the marijuana related crimes.

I say legalize. I know my parents don't ...lol my dad's totally against it. As an ex smoker, I agree that marijuana should be legalized. I know a lot more people that break laws after consuming alcohol that they do after smoking a joint(Besides that fact that smoking it is illegal. Some people may argue that pot is a gateway drug, but thats only true for people who have no self control. I smoked the stuff for 5 years and never ventured into trying another drug. A lot of people also dont think of all the disorders that pot could help;ADHD, depression, eating disorders, insomnia etc. And when in fact they do legalize, let me know so I can spark up again....1 more thing, the government makes too much money with pot being illegal, they'd lose money if it were to be legalized

I'm 55, and I agree. Why should alcohol and cigarettes, both of which have been PROVEN to be much more harmful than marijuana be legal, but we are so scared of pot? Wake up, people, it isn't the marijuana that is causing the problem...it is US!!

Lol... Your last statement got me. Have you ever seen the show Weeds? That's my mom. I just discovered that a few months ago. And we aren't a trashy family either, we live in a nice house and have nice things. Maybe that's why... :)
Anways, everything he said is right, but if you want my thoughts about it in detail you can check his profile. I just answered a similar question.
The tree of knowledge was probably his weed plant, and in that verse the bible was teaching people not to mess with other people's stash. :)

You want to waste your life in a stupor, go ahead. I think it should be legal. But that doesn't mean I think it's a smart thing to be doing.
The rest of your arguments are just rationalization. You could apply them to anything. Hitting people on the head with rocks, maybe. Didn't GOD give us all these rocks? And a lot of people have done it! Maybe even your parents!

I think it is a bad idea since it is a depressant and the last thing we need in a slumping economy is all the people who are out smoking cigarettes smoking joints instead and then being all laid back and not working as hard, causing our productivity to drop and make our economy even worse.
Didn't think about the results of your action beside health did you?

i dont think they will legalize it anytime soon because it would be to hard for the government to control.
It is so easy to get pot, that even if they did legalize it, and you could go to a gas station and buy it, it would be cheaper to obtain it the same way people are now, especially if the governement taxed the hell outa it.

So . . . what's the question? Did you just want to rant a little bit about your illegal activities?
By the way - "You might as well even suspect that you're parents do it." Makes no sense.
Did you know that "you're" stands for "you are"? Isn't that like second grade grammar?

Just because it grows in the ground does not make it good for you (i.e. tobacco=nictoine) Also check out the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. That was something that God himself created but be seen but not touched!!
