Zero is not that intuitive and was ‘invented’ for at least two reasons (and not at the same time). It is a place holder like in 10 but we cam also say that 10 is X in which case we do not need a place holder. It other application it represents 'nothing'. What is nothing? cayou imagine 0 pencils? What color are they, what shape? If you think carefully it becomes an uncomfortable concept. It took zero to appear before mankind for quite sometime.

The idea of a special symbol zero value placeholder was invented by the Babylonians in the third century BC. It wasn't exactly the same as our current concept of zero, though. For example, it was only used in the middle of numbers. Prior to inventing a special symbol to signify an empty 'digit' (digit isn't really the right word, since they used a base 60 system), they just left a blank space between symbols to represent an empty space - the problem being interpreting how many empty spaces the writer meant to signify when there were two or more empty spaces in a row. A lot of people consider the Babylonian's 'zero' to be more an invention of a placeholder symbol than the true invention of the number zero.

The first real zero, as we know it today, was invented by either the Hindus or the Mayans. It's hard to date Mayan writings, but is more likely that the Hindus were the first to use zeroes. The Hindu zero was used by the mid-fifth century AD at the latest, while the Mayan zero was used in the 4th century AD at the earliest.

Edit: The reason for the difference between foreyes4's answer and my dates is that if you're going to disqualify the Babylonian zero, then you have to appy the same rules to the Hindu zero. When did it first appear vs when did it actually encompass the entire concept of zero?

The number zero that we are accustomed to, came into existence rather late, around 200 A.D. (centuries after the great Classical Greek Period, which can arguably be called the origin of the modern mathematics). The number zero as we know it was conceived by the Hindus from India. The Hindus were the first to recognize a mathematical representation of concept of no quantity.
