I want to get my files out of my old laptop. It needed a new motherboard but I never got one; I ended up just getting a new computer. Anyway, now the battery is dead so it won't turn on anymore (and the power plug obviously doesn't work to make it turn on either). Do you know how I can easily get my files? Thank you :)

there is no easy way of doing this. you have 2 options. 1. take you computer to a shop and ask them to transfer you hard drive to DVD or CD. or 2. you can remove the drive from your lap top buy and external hard drive case for a small hard drive (laptop hard drive) install your hard drive into the case and then connect it to your new PC and transfer the files that way.

As the old computer is a laptop, the connectors for the hard drive are not going to be IDE (ths standard for desktop computers) so you are probably not going to be able to take the hard drive out and put it into another computer. They do make special trays that you can put a laptop hard drive into and then plug into the back of you new computer using a USB cable that comes with the tray. Then you would be able to transfer the files to your new computer.

Most computer shops will be able to take the drive out of your laptop and copy all of your important files to some other media (like DVD's). Cost for the job should be around $50-$100.

Well if all it was was your motherboard went bad, that should mean your hard drive is still good. You can take out the hard drive of the laptop and put it in another system and transfer your files. Keep in mind that "regular" hard drives use different cables from tower systems than laptops. The hard drives in laptops are much smaller.

Woooo now if that isn't bad luck. I'm sure is away you might even keep your old laptop if is not that much broken down. But you might want to ask the real technicians at www.protonic.com is free and fast.

You will have to find someone else with the same laptop to put your hard drive in. Laptop hard drives are usually customized to the specific laptop.

Just open it, remove the hard drive, plug it into your new laptop (or another computer so you don't void your warranty), then put them on a disc.

You can MOVE the hard drive from the BROKEN computer into a desktop computer as a SLAVE drive. But you will have to buy the mini-IDE adapter first.

You can format the hard drive, info here:http://www.computerhope.com/fdiskhlp.htm, but there will still be some info there. To truly clear it all away, use a program called BCWipe which will do the job: http://www.whitecanyon.com/wipedrive-wipe-hard-drive.php?source=overture+wipe+computer&OVRAW=bcwipe&OVKEY=bc%20wipe&OVMTC=standard
