which port cable you purcahsed, connect cable with both ends, and make setting to share data in both laptops, but normally you can transfer files between laptops with infra red (without using any cable) because nearly every laptop have infra red port.

good luck with that .. better off to use a small hub and put the 2 laptops in the same workgroup, and share the folders.
Or
If you are feeling a little more adventurous, why not network the two PCs together. Both PCs will need network cards and chances are they will already have these installed -- look for a port at the back that looks slightly bigger than a telephone jack.
Next, you'll need a crossover Ethernet cable, which you should be able to pick up from your local Dick Smith or Tandy for about $5 - $10.
Connect the cable to both network cards and click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Network Setup Wizard on the new computer. After going through a couple of steps on-screen, you'll be prompted to save the settings to floppy disk. Next, run the Network Setup Wizard on the old PC.
Once this is completed, you should be able to see the shared folders on the new PC through My Network Places to copy files into.

Just connect the ends of the cable to the 10/100 (also called Ethernet) ports of both computers. I hope that one/both of the computers has an IP address and subnet mask. Then go to My Network Places and right-click on the LAN connection to the primary laptop (one which has the pictures on it). Cycle through the list to click on TCP/IP settings and click on Properties. Verify the IP address and note it down.
Do the same on the other laptop. If the second one doesn't have an IP, assign it an IP (usually a one bit difference with the first laptop will do). So if your first laptop has an IP address of 192.168.1.240, you can assign an IP address of 192.168.1.241 to the second. Assign the correct subnet, usually, it will be 255.255.255.0 for both. You don't need to assign a gateway for the second since it is directly connected. Ensure that the IP addresses don't match those of other computers on the network.
Try pinging the second laptop from the first by saying: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at the command prompt. You can access the command prompt by typing cmd in the Start>Run dialog.
where the xxx will the IP address of the second laptop. If it successully pings, you can transfer data between the two laptops.
Have fun :)

To use a crossover cable without a router, you need to SET the IP address uniquely for each computer.
Use 192.168.0.1 for one and 192.168.0.2 for the other.
Set the WORKGROUP name to the same thing, but NAME the computers differently.
Then set FILE SHARING.
