I recommend buying all new. Fixing that old computer means more trouble later. If it is more than 3 years old, consider yourself lucky.

Get a Toshiba this time. They are highly rated.

Look at them at Wal-Mart or Costco. Make sure that you LOOK before you BUY. Also, inquire about their RETURN policy. Stores that charge a RESTOCKING fee suck.

Not all motherboards are created equal. You'll have to do a bit of research to do solve this problem. The safest bet to find out what type of motherboard you currently have in your laptop. By this I mean, who is the manufacturer and what is the model number. To get this information, you have to look at the actually board. I would go to a professional to get this done. There are several stores out there you can look. If you can't find the exact one you have, then this is where the fun begins. Identify the features you have (ie video, number of memory slots, lan vs. modem, etc). From there find other motherboards that are similiar. Most speciality stores can help find equivilants for your system. Course with a laptop, depending on how old it is, it maybe more economical to just get a new one.

I will have to know more details in order to help with the specific problem. But for your question the answer is definitely no. In laptops unlike desktops every item is costume made for that specific laptop model and company. That is mainly done because of simple wight and space constrains. There fore unlike desktops that you can almost assemble from any vendors. Laptops are very limited in what you can replace in them. Hard drive modems RAM and network cards are usually the only thing with in a laptop that is not costume made for that specific model. However motherboards are. So really if it is your mother board that is fried you will have to contact the manufacturer for a replacement mother board. Sometimes if the laptop is a common model like some of the dells are you can find that mother board relatively cheap on eBay. Other times you have to go through the manufacturer which cost you lots.

No. You have to ge the specific board to match you model of laptop. Do you see anything when you first turn on the laptop? Does it beep at all? When you hookup the external monitor try the function key combo. There should be a FN key. Then look at the F keys and look for a monitor icon. Hit the FN kay and that monitor icon key. That switches it from built in monitor to external monitor or to both monitors.

Is it out of warranty?
