Too expensive & they don't work very well. You'll be better off with a paid plan if you use a prepaid plan the costs are higher.

I have used both Tracfone and regular cell phone plans.

It all depends on what your needs are. It will take some effort on your part to determine which of the options are in your real best interests.

If you are disciplined enough to simply keep the phone for only real emergencies, then TracFone can be a good plan, so long as you are not in roaming, or unaccessible areas.

If you travel out of the TracFone regular service area or any number of other issues, then it can either cost you a great deal or prove non-functional when you do need it.

Take time to read the contracts or agreements regarding service and service areas, and determine whether it meets your needs, and determine as best you can what it will cost you, both in purchase price, activation fees, and usage minutes. This is really the only way to know which is really best in any specific situation.

In general, with the use of all, I repeat ALL the discount options available to a TracFone customer, it can be the lowest cost of all the prepaid phone options, but so much depends on the individual user.

Tracfones are ok, the rate of cost per minute is high though. They do have the most coverage area. If you live in a large city I would check into a Virgin Mobile. I have the flip phone and it is great. The coverage is not good in rural areas or mountainous areas such as in the mountains in Kentucky, but I get great service all over the US. You can choose 3 different pricing plans, I chose to pay 35 cents a day and only pay 10 cents a min versus tracfones cheapest rate of 25 cents a min..

When I first moved to this state I got a TracFon and used it for a few months. Eventually, I needed more texting abilities, so I switched over to Nextel. I'm sure I'm spending more for my phone now than I did with comparable usage on the TracFon and the phone I got for $50 with TracFon was a whole lot better than this Nextel thing.

For light usage, a TracFon is the way to go, just make sure you don't run out of minutes.

trac phone is a rip off. I used it when i first heard about cell phones. Paid 80 bucks for the phone and its 50 cents a minute. Now they sell there phones for 20 bucks and probably lowered the minute rate. But even so, there coverage is way less than any one else. Try Cingular, if you get a cingular phone that used a "chip" in the back under the battery then you can use it for the pre-paid plan, it costs 2 bucks for the chip and activation, it comes with 10 dollars of air time on it too. They charge 10 cents a minute and a dollar for each day you use it. It ends up about 35 cents a minute. I have been satisfied with it so far.

I think these are a big rip-off. You have to buy minutes, and they are expensive, there are no free night and weekends. Another option would be "Pocket" . I am not sure if you have it in your area, but its a new mobile phone provider. There is no contract, you simply purchase your phone (around 100.00 but there are cheaper ones) and they activate it for you(free for new customers) and your bill is a flat $28.00 a month. No hidden fees or any of that crap, except taxes of course. So around $32.00. You can call wherever, whenever, and for however long you want, and your bill is the same. You never have to worry about peak calling times or running out of minutes. The only draw back is the calling range, and it may be different in your area. It is not very big here is south texas, we have a lot of area to cover you know. We can drive over 100 miles in a day just getting to work, thats how spread out this place is. But for denser populated communities it is probably ok. But for here you would be on roam in some areas and of course then would be charged more for the calls made and recieved on roam. Another thing with those tracphones, calls made on them cannot be traced. Thats why all the terrorists are buying them up. I believe they should be banned. We are supplying terrorist with a way to communicate that we cant even trace, its crazy.

I absolutely love my Tracfone.!

I bought the sleek silver Motorola flip phone, which you can now get for only 49.99, and it comes with 10 min. to start with.

The airtime cards are inexpensive, much better than contract.
I usually purchase the 450 min. card, and it is only 39.99.
The more minutes you buy, the better the deal you get.

And, it comes with great extras. I have call waiting, text messaging, voice mail, and a ton of other cool features that come standard.

If you are thinking of getting a cell, I very much suggest the Tracfone flip Moto.

Hope ya like it!

I have had a tracfon for a year and I find it to be ideal for someone that hates bills coming monthly. If you buy the year card whenever you by extra time it doubles for you which is a real selling point. I had Singular for three years and found it to be no more dependable than the trac and there is no roaming extreme expense. Try it out its cheap enough.

Although it gets the job done. its not a good phone. You have to keep putting airtime minutes on the phone. Airtime minutes come in units. I know this because my grandmother owns a tracphone. Sometimes when you put airtime minutes on the phone it can take up to a max of 3 days to recieve. You can put units on the phone either by phone or the website.
Your best bet to go with for prepaid phones is Verizon, Cingular , or Virgin Mobile.

Trac Phone pros:
Maximum of 60 days to top up.
Cheap Phone ( you can buy it at Walmart for $20)

Cons:
Not a high tech phone ( outdated)
Reception is somewhat static

Hard to find a holistor for the phone

I used to have one. Cost me allot of money! Was looking for a cell phone, but didn't want to pay the deposit to the cell phone company. Spent way over that in the long run. I think they would be great for someone who only used it for emergencies, etc., but for regular use, your ahead to just go through a cell phone company and get an unlimited plan. Plus, allot less hassle than constantly buying those minute cards.

they don't work as well as other phones......and they are not really a cell phone, they are just a little phone. That's why they call them a tracfone. They can be used as one but they are hard to set up.
