Go to allmusic.com and click on Advanced Search ( you must register a user name, but it is free)
Choose Pop, Style, then type in Alternative Rock.
Select Alternative Pop/Rock
What you find there is a paragraph talking about Alt rock, Album highlights that you can listen to, a list of Top Artists, Top Albums and Top Songs that have links to pages with quite thorough descriptions.
Allmusic.com is the most complete reference site for all kinds of music I have seen. I have used it for years for researching music.
