I agree that they both go hand in hand. Your charecter is what most people see the first time they see you. Your repuation is what they hear about before they see you or what they formulate after they meet you. Each supports and equals the other.

i completely disagree with mrsd. your character is who you actually are, while your reputation can be so many things you aren't. people don't always know the whole story, and when the word gets around about who you are in people's minds, it isn't really a reflection of the truth.

your reputation could be a mirror image of your character, but that's only if people don't judge you from what they hear or see.

the better of the two is definitely character. It's who you are in your life and what you think of yourself. not what random people think.

If you have good character, chances are you will also have a good reputation. They go hand in hand. Unless someone lies about you and ruins your reputation. But even then, a good steadfast character will eventually dispel the lie in time.
