Character is who you are as evidenced by the choices you make and the way you live your life and interact with people and situations.

Reputation is like a poll rating, a consensus of public opinion about you by people who know you or have heard of you or read about you.

They are not separate from each other, but they also are not a total picture of you as a person. You can have a good character but have your reputation tarnished by a single mistake or rumor or accident of circumstances. You can have a bad character, but build a good reputation by hiding your evil intentions and actions from publication. Sometimes your motivations (linked to your character) are not considered, only your actions, so your reputation is not always accurate.

You need to decide which is more important to you - the easy way (making choices based on how your reputation will be affected), or the hard way (making choices based on what you think is right, no matter how your reputation may suffer).
