please install spybot S&D and enable tea time and do not allow any strange changes when you are installing the smileys, then and ony then you will be safe.

They don't have viruses (usually), but I'm pretty sure there'll be a ton of spyware associated with them, or any other "free" application...not to mention you'll probably have to give them your email address, which they'll sell and you'll get a ton of spam as a result of it.

Usually not viruses, but spyware and/or adware, which is often worse. Best to leave them alone.
