Strength training will defintely help in adding more power to your punch...Other than that most of the people who answered your question have given you good direction with regards to the mechanics of an effective punch.

I would be glad to answer your question. First of all Boxing, like Basketball or baseball is a sport. We all can learn and do well in any learned sport.

But "knockout power", or being a great homerun hitter in baseball really can't not be learned. Having that knockout power generated from your arms would be basically a gift that you can't learn. Great home run hitters in baseball have that natural power and timing to belt a homerun. What you can learn in Boxng, Baseball or any other sport is technique to enhance your natural power but that's it.

Now, you hit the guy ten times and he said you don't have power. Now, that probably is true. If you never accidentally knocked out a kid in a play fight as a kid, then you probably dont have that "power punch", and most of us don't.

Instead, learn the technique to generate what power you have. Continue to hit a punching bag, over and over, and your fists will feell stronger. But, very importanly it's also natural "speed" that generates the power. So, keep your arms flexible, don't "arm punch" which means swing wildly, but instead if you are a right hander, keep your left foot in front of your right foot and instead of swinging wildly, punch straight very fast at his chin in a rapid, shocking motion. It may take you a while to enhance your power to knock him out. And also, a knock out doesn't have to be done by hitting a person on the chin, it could also be from contact on the temple, face, jaw or chin. Keep that in mind.

*Keep in mind also, your friend is basically clenching his chin knowing you will punch him and he also maybe he has the gift of a "solid chin" which he could naturally absorb a punch better than you.

Don't be discouraged.

Shaolin monks take a stack of paper and put it against a brick wall concrete or something like that pin the paper up and punch for an hour or two the wall withers but the fist takes less impact and still gets full affect of the exercise. Great for fist durability and impact power :)

I boxed for a few years as an amateur, and I work with a guy who boxed professionally. When you practice throwing your punch you also have to swivel your hips in the direction that you are throwing. To throw an effective right cross you must extend your left leg with your knees slightly bent in the forward direction, stand on the right ball of your fight and move your waiste in the direction that you are throwing your punch. If you are throwing a left hook you slightly extend your left knee and bend to make a ball on your left foot and swivel your hips with the punch. The power is in the hips not the shoulder.

Punching hard has nothing to do with your fist it barley has anything to do with your arm. You need to build up the mussels in your shoulders, back & chest. Also train yourself to use your whole body when punching, just using your arm is useless. If your not punching right it doesn't matter how strong you are.

When you punch, snap it. What I mean by that is use your whole body. When your fist turns right before it hits, pull your opposite arm back quickly and use your hips to turn into the punch. If your right arm is punching, put your right hip behind it and pull back on your left arm. After your fist connects, snap that arm back.

Well, if your trying to knock him out with A jab then that's the wrong way to go, get him with A hard hook or cut and you'll be good.
