i cheer at my school and the only people that say it is a sport are the cheerleaders and our principle....even our athletic director says it is not a sport. We (the cheerleaders) thought that if we won nationals in Orlando (which we won our category) that students and teachers alike would say "wow! they worked hard and wow it really is a sport!" but they didn't. I guess since we wear skirts and are cheery and peppy that they consider us more as a support system that an actual sport....but honestly, i don't think any of them could last a day in our shoes....having to put up with all of the insults and lifting people in the air, doing round off-back handsprings- back tucks, remembering all of the cheers and dance moves you learned the night before to do in front of a huge crowd....they just don't understand.

Cheerleading competition is indeed a sport that requires a lot of gymnastic ability, style and form. I'm a guy and I love it and not just because the cheerleaders are good looking but how they do those moves in formation and the agility.

It is a given, that it is a highly skilled activity. The competions are even exciting. But a sport demands a goal, a winner and a loser. Throw girls and flipping in place is not a sport. Clapping, hand gestures and yelling is not a sport. Maybe it's an activity or a performance not a sport. Kind of like pro wrestling, very athletic, very skilled but not a sport.

Is dancing a sport? Are cartwheels a sport? They really need to have a cheerleader IQ contest. Now that would be worth watching.

Probably because you're not pushing, hitting, kicking, or hitting a ball somewhere. I knew several girls who did cheerleading, and it was very hard work for them, they travel all over the country for events and everything else.
I think cheerleading should be a sport!

it is a sport. you have to lurn and rememger the rules and dances like sports do.....therefore it is a sport. just tell those people that it is a sport because of these reasons....and if they still dont want to think that it is a sport ignore them....if they try to speak to you then walk away. because it is a sport.
