Are Background checks worth doing? do they really show things up say from 30 years ago?

Yes. Most people lie on their application. Background checks can detect if a person is running from the law, and there of lots of these people out their. Honesty is a hard thing to come by these days. All business must protect themselve from unsavory people. One of the most vulnerable business enterprises to deception is the church. Criminals will attach themselves to religious organizations as a means of hiding from the law and gaining minimal financial support. The church also offers them a huge exposure to a wide variety of people that can unknowingly aid them in their fugitive activities. Aslo, churches are notorious for being lax in security and for being overly trusting.

Background checks are always a good idea. They can keep you safe from liable suits say for instance the person you hired to drive a delivery truck had a prior history of DUI charges and you hired him and he killed someone while on the job and was intoxicated your company could be held liable for the death of the person for hiring him. Background checks let you make a responsible and well informed decision as to the competancy of the person you want to hire for a particular job.

yes they are worth doing. we recently didnt do a backgroudn check on an employee and after a while foudn out he had a criminal record of embezlement. which wouldnt have been a bad thing except 1- he lied about it on applciation and 2---was heavily into some kind of mood enhancing substance....was fired for lying on application
