also, check out your local state job center. they aren't just there for unemplolyment cases!!
you can find computer terminals to use, their own database of employers with job postings, and you can use their fax machine to fax resumes with usually little to no charge (phones too).
also, check local schools, maybe UNC??? for career fairs on campus or at local locations. just call up their career center on campus and ask if they will be sponsoring any job fairs in the future.
also, check with staffing agencies (temp agencies). many employers use these agencies to "try before they buy". they may be able to place you somewhere with the intent to make you permanent!

Networking, networking, networking. In today's employment marketplace, your best bet (though you should not rule out papers and employment sites - especially any local employment sites) is to talk to friends who work in companies that have departments you're interested in. Sometimes those companies won't know that they want to hire someone to do what you do, but they need your skills.

go to local trade shows or expos in your field...take a stack of resumes or business cards...hand them out to anyone and everyone...
