Well as an Ex Marine, all I know of them are what I have been told... Dirty condtions, bars and easy girls and hookers off all types...
The cops are the types that dont fool around, they will beat you with a night stick half to death.
Corruption runs amok, and that most of it is backwards and the population are very poor.
Fishing is a big industry, and taking money from tourists.
Of course, I never got to hear of the good parts, where families live and things like a wholesome life, as families come together, and have churches and things like that. Only that shopping is done in open air markets, (but after 30 years it has to be better than that.
I know by now you have modern Cities and only the docks are probably infested with prostitutes and bars, and low lifes that harbor around these areas.
As progress is always advancing, I am glad that everyone will be marching on to better things...

Beautiful place...fine people...the hustle and bustle of Manila...trouble in Mindanao...Pagsanjan Falls...the crew of my ship (about 30 Filipinos, plus 10 of us American officers)...Jose Rizal, Ramon Magsaysay, the Marcoses, Benigno and Cory Aquino, EDSA 1 and 2, and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo...I love it.
