Russell Simmons is an important entrepreneur and influence on American urban music in his role as promoter and founder of Def Jam Records and Rush Communications. He is regarded as the force who brought black, hip-hop culture into the American
mainstream. He has produced such popular groups as Run DMC (his brother Joseph is "Run") and Kurtis Blow. Def Jam signed mega acts like The Beastie Boys and LL Cool J and helped to globally popularize the intense urban sound that had yet to be heard outside the inner city.

In addition to music, Simmons has overseen a corporate empire that included Phat Farm label clothing and a management company. Simmons is also the producer of Def Poetry, a Broadway show that has earned numerous accolades. He was heavily involved in the campaign to get out the youth and minority vote during the 2004 presidential election.
